When walking into Genesis Orwell Mencap you could see a tide of green in celebration of Global Dignity Day. It was a worldwide event that we wouldn’t miss for the world because of the brilliant cause that it is honouring. The importance of dignity is never lost on Genesis and our staff as we pride ourselves on always providing a dignified service that respects our service users.

This Global Dignity Day was a brilliant reminder of everything Genesis stands for. Our support coordinator Sarah, leads on dignity, and she compiled a presentation to perform to all service users and support workers about the importance of being treated with dignity. The presentation outlined examples of dignified and undignified care. After the talk all the service users wrote down their own experience of care, and whether they felt it was dignified or not onto a green heart. It was a great chance for service users to express how they felt about the care they have been receiving at Genesis.

The fun did not stop there as in our cooking sessions everyone baked cupcakes and made special green icing to put on the cupcakes. The cupcakes added to the green tide all to honour such a brilliant cause. Disabled individuals rely on other individuals to administer their care, which means it is so important that they are treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve in every aspect of their care.

Whether it be our personal care suites that we have installed at Genesis that means we are able to administer care in a dignified way. Or Genesis’ promise to all our service users that our care is centered on what they want, we value disabled individual’s choices over anything.

Genesis hopes to bring the message and spirit of dignity day to every single day that we are open. As a service that provides personalised day services to individuals with disabilities this is paramount. We provide learning disability care and physical disability care in Ipswich in our day center. We also provide home support for disabled adults in Suffolk. Our holiday club STARS provides care for children with disabilities in Suffolk.
