About Us
Genesis Orwell Mencap is a local charity that provides adult learning disability services. From our Genesis centre in Ipswich, we offer day care for adults with special needs, complex disabilities and profound and multiple learning disabilities.
Over 25 Years’ Experience
We have over 25 years’ experience in care services, and our main site at Wright Road is well equipped to cater for people with a wide range of abilities including complex needs. The emphasis is on developing independence, providing stimulating activities and work experience training.
Our Services
Our services include daytime support services, support in the home and community, domiciliary services, an evening social club, supported living, the Green Bike Project, and the Genesis Garden Furniture workshop. Whether you would like to join one session or receive 24-hour support every day of the year, contact us for more information.

Our History
Background
Orwell Mencap first opened in 1993 as Orwell Patterns for Living, providing work-based training through the manufacture of garden furniture, which evolved into our Genesis Garden Furniture workshop. We moved to our current site in 1999 and have continued to adapt the site to meet customers’ needs, opening the Green Bike Project in 2009 and expanding to make site developments including our wheelchair friendly, sensory American diner that opened in 2018.
We believe provisions for adults with learning disabilities is not adequate, so we are doing something about it. For us, the best care is about giving people support that touches their lives and helps them when they need it most, without taking away their independence. We offer opportunities for days out and organise activities on a 1 to 1 or group basis, helping you develop your life skills and social skills.
We provide our own transport to give you peace of mind and our fully trained staff are passionate about always giving the kind of care they would want to receive, always providing a high level of dignified personal care.
How you are supported is always your choice, and we make a promise to respect that. We will always listen and give you as much or as little support as you want or need from us – it’s up to you.
By listening to our customers, we have become one of the most recommended providers of services to people with disabilities in the region. We also make sure wherever possible that we team up with other charities and organisations to create services through strong partnerships.
We are affiliated to the national Mencap society and actively share and support their vision, mission and core values.
